  • Flags flying proudly over Wirral parks

    Several Wirral parks are now proudly flying their Green Flags – some for the first time ever – after a series of ceremonies last weekend.

    Queens Park in Hoylake, Bebington’s Mayer Park, Central Park in Wallasey and Victoria Park, Birkenhead all hosted events to hoist their hard-earned accolade last Saturday to coincide with the eighth annual World Parks Day.

  • Further improvements for Guinea Gap

    The Leisure Pool at Guinea Gap Leisure Centre in Seacombe will close for four weeks from this Friday to allow for structural repairs to take place.

    The closure will cause some disruption to activities that take place in the Leisure Pool, mainly affecting the open, public swimming sessions. Wherever possible, scheduled classes or swimming lessons are being transferred to the adjoining Training Pool at Guinea Gap.

  • Liverpool City Region Combined Authority starts phased negotiation for devolution

    Members of Liverpool City Region Combined Authority have agreed initial priorities in negotiations around devolution.

    After meeting yesterday, Cllr Phil Davies, Chair of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, and Leader of Wirral Council, said: 'Our devolution document submitted on 4 September 2015 set out a wide range of devolution proposals – more than 50 specific proposals across 14 key themes. All of these are important in helping to improve the economic and social wellbeing of the City Region’s residents and communities.

  • Businesses unite to offer parking savings

    Traders in Heswall have joined forces with Wirral Council to offer discounts on car parking charges for their customers.

    Organisations who are members of the Heswall and District Business Association (HDBA) are offering individual cashback deals to customers who spend in their shops or on their services having paid to park in Wirral Council ‘Pay and Display’ car parking spaces.

  • Wirral makes ‘real progress’ building financial resilience, says independent report

    Wirral has made ‘real progress’ in arrangements for delivering value for money and achieved good financial performance, says a new independent report.

    The Grant Thornton review, which will be presented to Wirral’s Audit and Risk Management Committee on Monday next week, recognises the Council’s progress in securing governance and financial management which, it says, has secured ‘economy, efficiency and effectiveness.’

  • Residents to help shape the future of public services

    Thousands of Wirral residents will get the chance to shape the priorities and programmes of the public sector in the largest research and consultation project ever seen in the borough.

    The council is holding a partnership summit with public sector, business and community groups to discuss its Wirral Plan for 2020, and is launching a borough-wide survey to gather residents’ opinions.

    The research, delivered by leading research agency Ipsos Mori, will be repeated annually and is a major element of delivering on the Wirral Plan for 2020.

  • Inspirational young citizens HYPE up their future

    A group of young people from Wirral have been working to transform a neglected piece of open space at a local project into a useable and attractive garden.

    The teenagers are one of 11 groups who took part in the National Citizen Service programme in Wirral, which attracted 158 participants this year.

    As part of their ‘social action’ stage of the programme, the groups were asked to select a community project to get involved with and plan and deliver an activity that would leave a lasting legacy.

  • Wirral smokers urged to sign up to Stoptober

    Stoptober – the National 28 day quitting challenge from Public Health England – is back in Wirral and smokers are encouraged to join up and quit together for Stoptober 2015, using a range of free online resources, local stop smoking service support and a touch of Great British humour.

    To stand an even better chance of quitting this year, Wirral residents are encouraged to sign up with their friends, family and colleagues, as evidence reveals that ‘social quitting’ can dramatically improve people’s chances of successfully stopping.
